I believe that the U.S. should not have overthrown Queen Liliuokalani and taken over Hawaii at this time. Hawaii allowed American sugar traders to come to Hawaii and trade there, and they also traded with the U.S. before they went to Hawaii. They allowed America to trade with them, come onto their land and then, when Hawaii, specifically Queen Liliuokalani, showed discipline, America responded by disrespecting Hawaii by overthrowing their queen and making it a U.S. state.

Brandon A. said...

I think it was. Think about it even though we took away their freedom and power they are not strong enough to protect themselves. If we had not taken Hawaii then some other country might have taken Hawaii and used Hawaii to to attack us.I admit that the way we took it was not the best if we had not taken it we would pay for it.

In my opinion no, the United states could have taken a better approach to get Hawaii for use of American needs. The United States could have had a better chance of getting Hawaii if they negotiated with Hawaii's former Queen Lili'uokalani. Or the United States could have just brought Hawaii. Even though annexing Hawaii gave the United States a shipping stop and free land to set up military bases that were closer to Asia. I still think that it was wrong to just take someone's land without asking and changing the Hawaiian peoples ways and culture.

I believe that annexing Hawaii to the United States was the right thing to do even though Hawaii might not have wanted that to happen. In the 1800s the U.S. was still a very powerful country economically. That being true, even if Hawaii didn't realize it, it might have helped them to join a powerful nation that had a good military power and was well off economically. Queen Liliuokalani did not want Hawaii to become part of the U.S. because she would lose her position as Queen because the U.S. did not have a Monarchy system of government, it had a democracy.

I think taking over Hawaii was not only best for America but for Hawaii. Hawaii might not be flourishing as well as it is. By us taking over Hawaii we gave it the benefit of our government, education, money, protection and our little natural resources we have. Hawaii is hugely benefiting from our benefits. I think not only America but Hawaii benefited from joining the states.

I believe that the United States's decision to annex Hawaii was wrong. I believe this because the United States went against its word and imposed tariffs on the imported sugar. Therefore the United States lost its influence in the islands and lost economic control. The United States should have tried to regain economic control and keep the peace. Although America was trying to become an empire, I believe that the steps the United States took to capture Hawaii was unconstitutional. Our country has has prided itself on honesty and without that no one would want to join our nation

I believe the United States was right to annex Hawaii. First, Te united states would own most of the territory. Second, the american sugar planters which would creat more trading ability. Third,Hawaii was closer to China and Japan those two countries were huge trading countries, so Hawaii would be an opportunity to receive the goods faster.

JoseM said...

The United States was right to annex Hawaii to the other states. First of all, the American sugar planters owned most of the territory there. Second, the U.S. had many military bases in Hawaii. Having the American sugar planters' territory and removing the military bases would have caused problems and conflict between the U.S. and Hawaii. Besides, the annexing of Hawaii to the American states was a positive turn in Hawaii's history because the U.S. was and still is a world power. A weaker country like Hawaii, wouldn't have a stable government as an independent country.

It was nice that the United Staes had the chance to get another territory, but the Hawaiians opposed this decission. I believe that when the Unites staes took over their islands, it ruined thier ways of livng. Queen Lili'uokalani also tried to oppse this decicsion, but then she was sent to jail after the attempt. After researching more about the annexation of Hawaii there were more Hawaiians not wanting the annexation than i thought. I would also be dissapointed if another country tried to rule over me. But i still love America:)

Caroline A. said...

From the perspective of the Hawaiians this is a very unfair. The United States interfered and annexed Hawaii even though they didn't to that but the US did it to gain more power. So from this I think it was very unfair. From the perspective of the United States even though it wasn't fair it was in the best interest for the country for protection and to gain more power for the US. So I do believe that it was unfair but also helped the United States as a country.

I do not think it was right to annex hawaii. In fact i think the whole idea of the the darwinism theory was inconsiderate. Just because some people weren't massive rulers like america was dosen't mean they should be annexed. They have the right to start their own civilzation. Imperialist believed that since Hawaii had produce like sugarcane fields and territory that came in handy when america was trading over the pacific ocean they could just take it over beacause "the things meant to surrive do." America was wrong to annex hawaii.

Monica Z said...

The United States was right in annexing Hawaii because it would be perfect for naval bases. It was also right because if the U.S. didn't decide to take over Hawaii the Japanese would have and it would have been much more barbarous for the U.S. The U.S. did take the right step in annexing Hawaii but at the same time it did affect Hawii, making it part of another nation and not letting it be independent. Over all the U.S. was right.

Jack A. said...

I think it was right how the americans annexed Hawaii. I think it was a great way to gain more power and territory in the Pacific Ocean. It also has a ton of resources for americans. It also think it is a perfect spot for a stopping point for american traders. The directions say to comment about someone's post but nobody has commented

Alfonso M. said...

In my opinion, the U.S. didn't have the right to annex Hawaii. I believe the America was very arrogant at the time and they thought they can go and take over other countries. In other words, they were imperialists.

Luis A said...

The U.S. had no right to do that to Hawaii because that was not what the Hawaiians wanted. Queen Liliuokalani also wanted Americans off of Hawaii but instead we just overthrew the queen and set up a provisional government there. It was just a very small group of Hawaiians who wanted for Hawaii to belong to the U.S. The small group of Hawaiians just wanted to get rid of the tariff on the sugar so that they could sell more sugar.

PaulinaB said...

I believe taking over Hawaii was a good thing for America. Althoug Hawaii didnt like the idea, but it was a great way to get resources, power and territory next to the Pacific Ocean.

Madison S. said...

From my point of view, I think that the United states was right to annex Hawaii, but in some ways it was also wrong. It was wrong because the Hawaiian's wanted to be independent, and the United States came in and invaded their space and they broke their promise and went ahead and imposed tariffs on the sugar. But the United States had military bases in Hawaii, so it would be complicated to remove them. I think they should've compromised with Hawaii and asked the Hawaiians what they wanted instead of invading. I think when the United States took over Hawaii, it was trying to become a more powerful county so it bought the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii probably wouldn't have been able to survive on its own because it it too small. Back then I think it wasn't such a good idea to take over Hawaii the way that the US did, but in the outcome, having Hawaii as one of the fifty states in the US, it was a good decision.

Jim B. said...

Personally I do not believe that what we did to Hawaii in the late 1800s was right. For one thing we brought disease and war to their peacefull island and killed many islanders. King Kamehameah was just about to unify the island uunder his rule when our sugar planters revloted and tore everything he had worked for apart. Then we annexed them to the U.S. without their consent. Instead I believe that we could have respected Hawaii's independence as their own country a little more (like we did to China).

Marcela D. said...

I think that it was wrong for america to annex Hawaii because they were an independent country. They had a stable government and were more than capable to take care of themselves.

Dylan K said...

I think that the U.S. had many reasons to annex Hawaii. Hawaii has many resources and is a very effective stop to travel to China. Also since all of Hawaiis product was being taxed no one would buy it. So Hawaii would have to export something else other than sugar cane.

Dylan K said...

I'am commenting on Alfanso post which was that America did not have the right to annex America. It is true that America was very imperialistic and wanted to expand it's sphere of influence. I disagree with what alfanso said because if America did not annex Hawaii some other country would have came along and annexed it to.

I would like to respond to Nicole's comment. Yes it is true that the U.S. broke their promise but the U.S. never lost economic control after adding tariffs to exported sugar. The Hawaiians lost economic power and Queen Liliuokalani wanted the Hawaiians to regain economic control. You certainly have a point about the U.S. being arrogant in some ways but back then, people weren't even thinking that far yet. In the time when imperialism was pretty popular, the people who wanted to immigrate to a new country only thought about moving to a country that was economically strong and that wasn't going to get dominated or taken over by another country. When many countries were dominating countries by using an imperialistic technique, the people that were moving to new countries, I'm thinking, weren't thinking about if a country was very arrogant or selfish. Immigrants just wanted to arrive at a generally good country. My point might be hard to understand but if you have any questions than please feel free to respond to my response.

Arguing with what Nicole said, I think it was wrong for the Queen to take away our power when we had not done anything wrong. All we had done was gained political power. What harm could we have done? The Americans and the Hawaiians could have lived peacefully together and blended cultures, until eventually Hawaii would have peacefully become part of the U.S.. The Queen wanted Hawaii to be strictly Hawaiian. I understand her thinking. I think the Queen could of handled the situation better though. The United states already had Hawaii in its sights and it was pretty determined to get it no matter what, even though they would of much rather had it peacefully since taking over Hawaii was really nothing all that prestigious and because it is not worth the deaths. The Queen should have realized this. This was the final straw for the United States. All of there hard work and importance was taken away from them when they were completely peaceful in gaining the power they had already gained. The United States took advantage of this situation and attacked. The Queen had brought this upon herself.

I agree with Brandon A., maybe the way we annexed Hawaii wasn't the best way or maybe not even the correct way but we still did and that's something that is in our favor. Have we not annexed Hawaii some other country would have and that other country could have easily used Hawaii to attack the U.S. I could think about this forever and still say we made the right decision.

Valerie Z said...

I think that for the United states annexing Hawaii was right. It was a good place for Naval bases, and was a good place for ships to stop on their way to China. Annexing Hawaii also helped the United States gain more power. The choice to annex Hawaii, gave the United States more territory which helped them in becomin an empire. Even though this helped the United States, I think it was unfair to the Hawaiians.

JudithG:) said...

I totaly disagree with Brandon A. because of with the way he put his input in this quetion. I have learned from AndrewZ that Hawaii was starting to create a bond with the U.S by trading, and not having much problems. The only situation where there would be a battle against Hawaii is if we tried to take their territoy, and fail at the attempt. But if Hawaii and the U.S left the way thing were, i don't think and difficulties would emerge.

Response to Alfonso.

I partially agree with Alfonzo. I agree he was correct on the part that the U.S. thinks they can do whatever they want and just goes and takes over countries. My thought is that we have the power to do that and we should take advantage of it. Most of the countries would do way worse things if they had the power of the U.S. There were many great reasons why the U.S. should have annexed Hawaii and it was a good thing they did.

Teagan M. said...

Responding to Rileys comment. I think he made a good point that both Hawaii and the United States had gained benefits. I didn't think about the benefits that the United States and Hawaii would gain when the United States annexed Hawaii. However, I think it was still wrong to overpower the Hawaiians queen then annex Hawaii. Then after the United States annexed Hawaii they didn't recognize Hawaii's independence. I think that the United States was wrong in annexing Hawaii.

Nicole S. said...

In response to Caroline's blog, I believe that your perspective about Hawaii is correct but I would have to disagree with your perspective about the United States. I believe that it wasn't in America's interest to annex Hawaii because all they would be gaining by taking it over was a small portion of land and a few resources, but nothing else. The United State's decision to annex Hawaii was not a wise decision. especially because the steps they took to make it possible.

Valerie Z said...

I agree with Nicole. I agreed with her, when she said that the steps that the United States took were unconstitutional and that the United States should have tried harder to keep the peace.

Response to Riley's comment: Riley was right in saying that Hawaii benefitted from its annexing to the U.S. The U.S. was a world power and by annexing Hawaii, that power became mutual betweeen the U.S. and Hawaii. AS time went by, the U.S.gained more power and eventually became the country that it is today. Hawaii got to share that power.

Alfonso M. said...

I disagree with Alan, in my opinion, the Hawaiians didn't deserve to get annexed because that isn't what they wanted. The Hawaiians wanted to be their own independent country with their own laws.

Brandon A. said...

To respond to Andrew's comment. I think that he doesn't realize how important it was to take over Hawaii. As I said in my previous response Hawaii was not strong enough to govern themselves and needed the help of the United States.

Andrew Z. said...

To respond to Brandon's comment, I believe that he is wrong. He is wrong because even though many other countries wanted Hawaii, we had a firm grip on them and I think we would have been willing to go to war to save Hawaii so we did not have to take it at this time.

Jim B. said...

I agree with what Riley said and how Hawaii recieved many benefits from us takingthem over, but there were also many down sides to it as well. For one thing many people died when we came became of unknown diseases that we brought. Also we destroyed many cultural sides to the island as well. I'm sure that many miles of forest land were lost when we established roads and businesses in which case would have severely hurt nature as well.

Jake J. said...

I do not think that the U.S. should have overthrown Queen Liliuokalani and anexed Hawaii. Hawaii traded with America and allowed America to walk on thier land.

Luis A said...

Response to Brandon's comment
I disagree with Brandon because Hawaii has its rights and we ignored those rights.Although Brandon is making a very good point in that another country could have taken over Hawaii and used it against us but at that moment, the U.S. didn't really care about that. All that the U.S. really cared about was to get a place for its ships to stop on their way to Asia. (by saying that the U.S.had no right to annex Hawaii, i am saying I disagree with all who said that the U.S. did have the right to annex Hawaii: Brandon, Riley, Adrian, Jose, Alan, Monica, Paulina, Dylan[also the people in the other class who{weren't really supposed to post in this blog} said that the U.s. had the right to annex Hawaii])

PaulinaB said...

I have to disagree with luis comment. I believe that Hawaii would be a disaster if it wasn't for America who took over. I do understand that Hawaii wanted to be independent but if America didn't take over another country would of.

Jake J said...

I disagree with Paulina's comment. I believe that if another country atempted to take over Hawaii, America could help fend of that country in order to save Hawaii. Hawaii would probably show even more respect for the U.S.

Caroline A. said...

I am responding to Jose's comment. Before I read his comment I believed that it wasnt fair to Hawaii but helped the United States gain more power. Now I look at annexing Hawaii from a whole new perpective. Jose was right, Hawaii would probably not have a stable govenment and becoming part of the US gave more power. So I believe it was a win win situation. Both the US and Hawaii benefitted in some way.

I am responding to Jakes comment because although what he said was true, he could have continued to say that America was also very ignorant because they didn't take into consideration what the natives would have wanted. Instead america just thought of themselves.

Julien A said...

Responding to Riley's comment: I think Riley is right that without Hawaii being part of the United States they wouldn't have had reliable resources. They are benefiting from us.

Bryce S. said...

I don't think the United States was right to annex Hawaii because Hawaii was nice enough to let U.S. traders come in and trade for sugar in Hawii with the Hawaiians. Queen Liluokalani was in charge of Hawaii at the time. The queen became a little more agressive . The americans did not like her actions and made HAwaii the 50th American State.

America was not right to annex Hawaii. The influence Darwinism had on the evolution of America was immense. All countries that werent central powers, or ruling, controling civilizations were annexed. That is morally unjust. Hawaii was starting to become a thriving territory with their sugar cane fields and their great location for sea ports but they werent given a chane to continue the growth of their nation. America was wrong to annex Hawaii. America took on the role as God and did what they thought would best help themselves when truthfully that isn't for america, the imperialists, to say.

Anonymous said...

Andrew Z. is one thousand percent correct. The queen at that time was being very quaint, and understanding, and considerate to the Americans, allowing them to go to their land and take some control of the natives. Andrew is right to say that over throwing the queen and making Hawaii a U.S. state was wrong and corrput of us.
