8B-- Lincoln is Dead! Reconstruction Blog

April 15, 1865, Richmond, Virginia

Dearest brothers and sisters,

The most joyous news has come to me this day; it spreads like wildfire across the Confederacy. The bane of the South, the man who drove Dixie into the ground, awaits his own burial. Lincoln is no more, struck down by the courageous John Wilkes Booth. With the smell of burning Richmond still fresh in my nostrils, my heart cannot help but rejoice at the news. My city is ash; my country is in ruins; my brothers and cousins butchered at the hands of the Yankees. Is this death justice? My heart says yes, but yet I wonder. The war is lost; general Lee rests in his rocking chair on his front porch not two miles from me, silent. His face shows only sadness and worry at the news-- the glorious general Lee who confounded the North and preserved Richmond until the end. I fear what will become of us. Will the fiery sword of Sherman be raised against us all? I fear. What are your thoughts, my brothers and sisters, on this matter?  I await your response.

Sic Semper Tyrranis,

Joe Watson, Sergeant in the Army of Northern Virginia

How could you be so heartless. Lincoln was an amazing leader who brought this country many great things. You should appreciate everything he did to attempt to bring the nation back together. As for me, I shall miss him greatly. In fact, I once got to meet President Lincoln because our first president, George Washington, was my great-grandfather. I do hope considerably that this nation shall come together again peacefully. As for Lincoln, he will be missed dearly, and may he rest in peace.

I do not rejoice at this news! Although I am from the South, I still greatly respect President Lincoln. Both my husband and son were soldiers for the Confederates. Sadly, my son died at war and when the Union won at war i was sure they were going to either put my husband in jail or kill him, but thankfully to President Lincoln they let him come home to me. I greatly appreciate what he did and at least we all know he is in a happier place. Rest in peace, President Lincoln

Joe Watson, you have not a heart, but a cold soul, wanting nothing but evil. President Abraham Lincoln was twice the man you'll ever be, and he took this country to new heights. He created a wonderful, free nation, though split and wounded, but a nation nonetheless. He guided the United States of America through the bloodiest, most grueling war we have ever seen. If Lincoln can make it through the Civil War, he can make it through anything. He has taken the impossible, and made it possible; Lincoln abolished slavery. He helped me and my family become free people. Now, we, along with many others, are mourning his loss. May President Abraham Lincoln rest in peace. God Bless the United Staes of America.

Dear fellow Americans,

I think many Americans are a disgrace to the name itself. I'm am from Britain and I fought for the Union, for once some pathetic lad thought he could take a stand against the Union. Well I tell you this, you may have tried to take down our government but you did not take are freedom. John Wilkes Booth, you will be hunted down and killed if its the last thing I do. I expect all Americans to do so.

Oh my goodness! You terrible person! How could the death of the best man this country has seen be a bad thing! That amazing man freed me, my mama, and my baby sisters from slavery. Then I met him and was in awe. It was the light at the end of this tunnel we've been in since that evil white man beat my poor Papa to death! We moved from Georgia to New York and have gotten a new life. Now thanks to him I can write some letters! Shame on you for celebrating the worst tragedy this country has ever seen!

What is wrong with you! How can you say such a thing! He was fighting for me and my people! It’s because of you whites that I was a slave for practically my whole life! You don’t understand what it is like to be a slave, and having to teach yourself how to read and write! I never got to meet President Lincoln or say thank you because of people like you! Rest in peace President Lincoln and I thank you with my life.

An assassination is never a happy thing but being from the south this could be different. Abraham Lincoln showed no mercy for our cities distroying everything. All of our land marks, churches, railroads, houses, and most importantly our people were distroyed. Only few of both men and women survived. Although John Wilkes Booth happened to be my son, he did what he thought was right, and he did this to try and help us southerners and I will support him. Now I can just pray that my Johnny is okay and all will end well with no more deaths or distruction.

I disagree completely. Lincoln was an amazing leader and shall be missed greatly. He lead us strongly through a terrible time filled with death and suffering. I lost my husband to this war and I have to manage my farm by myself, without Lincoln it would have been for nothing. The country will miss its strong leader and I only hope that you can understand that one day.

Union or confederate, no man in this country should have his life taken by another mans. President or not Abraham Lincoln was a brave man. John Wilkes Booth should have rotted in a jail cell for the rest of his life. As an educator I think all people should have equal rights, white or black. President Lincoln will be missed dearly, as for now, America must come together and be strong.

I am so grateful this evil man is dead. Let John Wilkes Booth go down in history. As the man who finally killed this man who ruined our beautiful nation. Let April 14 be a Confederate holiday.

Dear Mr. Watson,
I cant believe you're happy about Lincoln's death. He truly was an outstanding hero who helped our country in many different ways. I think you should be grateful for the things he did for us, which included trying to bring our country back together.Lincoln will be loved and missed greatly, God bless.

I disagree win Bartholomew Washington. Lincoln was a terrible leader! I am glad he is dead. Lincoln was the cause of the Civil War. He is the reason that countless lives were taken. Abraham Lincoln was a fool! All he did was cause pain to our nation! He himself has created the bloodiest war in history. I am glad that he can't harm our nation any more. As for the south, you might as well give up hope, or home is ruined.

Jeremiah Sox said...

Honestly Lincoln was a brave man. He suffered much more than any of us. Then again he was also the cause of the war. The Civil War, to Lincoln, was about the south succeeding. Lincoln is a liar and a coward. He was a proud abolitionist and hid it in his speeches. Most of his follower were too blind to notice his cowardly side. I was not. Lincoln lied to the public and tricked them into thinking he was on mutual sides. Lincoln was indeed a powerful man. He used his power to the ban slavery throughout the Nation.

Lincoln was a great leader and no one can take that away from him! As a slave I know how many great things he has done for our country; and im sure he would've continued all those wonderful things if it hadnt been for this unfortunate event. I am deeply saddened by the wrong doings of this man by the name John Wilkes Boothe;how could he have the guts to do such a tragedy? America wont find another like him Lincoln.I will miss him deeply; and may he R.I.P.
