I don't understand why Willlie Mufferson would still be called the "model boy". I thought that the book said that after reading and memorizing so many verses from the bible; he had worn out his brain. Why is he still called the "model boy" if he lacks the intelligence that he used to have?

Was the dialect Mark Twain used in his characters language of the time of the writing, purely an image he wanted to portray, or of a way to mock the characters or their place in time?

Answer to Anyssa's question:

All the boy's envy and adore Huckleberry Finn because he has the freedom and the independence they wish they had. Since Huck is the son of the town drunk, he can do pretty much whatever he wants because his father doesn't

Genevieve H. said...

Answering Lauren B.'s question:
"Why did Tom get licked by his school master when Tom told him that he was late because he stopped to talk to Huckleberry Finn?"
Everyone is forbidden to talk to Huck Finn because all the moms think Huck is a bad influence. Huck is the son of the town drunkard to make him more of someone moms don't want their children to hang out with.

Jake M said...

Answer to Carter C's Question.

The dialogue is an example of satire, Mark Twain overly exaggerates e way the people talk as a form of humor.

Sinead F. said...

I am answering the question:
Why does Tom envy Huckleberry Finn?

Tom envies him because Huck can do what ever he wants when ever he wants. Huck's dad never tells him what to do or how to behave because his dad is a drunk. Tom wishes to be like Huck because Aunt Polly is always telling Tom what to do, how to behave, what to wear, and he can and can't do.

Becca Gariepy 8B said...

Sinead Feeney said...

When Tom says I will lick you, what does this mean?

This means that he is going to fight him, and he fights only because he is in a bad mood.

Response to (Brian Murphy)In chapter 7, Tom appeals to Becky Thatcher with his "proposal" of engagement. He floods her mind with words of love in a near entrancement. Caught up the ruse, after "a faithful kiss" Tom slips and reveals his previous "engagement" to his Amy Lawrence. Becky is overcome with emotion from all of what now appear as lies to her, she breaks down and cries. Tom tries to please her, but to avail, he leaves , overtaken with frustration himself

Carter Conway 8B said...

In response to Zachary Cp

The reason that the dialog of the characters is sometimes completely distorted with ascents is because of Mark Twain's satire.

Ted S. said...

For Brian M`s. question The reason Becky Thatcher cried was because Tom said he used to be engaged to Amy Lawrence.

Paulo M. said...

For Alex SIngleton's question where did the story take place? The story takes place in Hannibal, Missouri.

Brian C said...

When Tom traded all of his "goods" to get the bible, did he do this because he actually wanted the bible or to show off?

Brian C. said...

In response to Sinead's question:

In Tom Sawyer, to "lick" means to punch, hit, slap, or beat someone up.

Alex Singleton 8a said...

PauloM said...
"Why does Tom want the bible? Is it just to show off or does he really want the bible?"

Tom wanted the bible to mainly show off that he had earned it. He didn't really earn the bible, but he impressed everyone because they thought he had earned it.

Megan Cracchiolo said...

Alex Singleton asked, "Where does The Adventures of Tom Sawyer take place?"

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer takes place in St. Petersburg, a small, fictional village created by Mark Twain. Mark Twain based this "poor little shabby village" on his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. Many locations in Hannibal correspond with the setting in Tom's hometown.

Maeve McIntyre said...

Sinead asked, "When Tom says I will lick you, what does this mean?" In answer to her question, "lick" is a slang term meaning to beat or thrash someone.

Why does Tom Sawyer feel the need to always have to sneak or trade things to get what he wants?

I think that Tom feels that he always has to trade thing because he doesn't have alot so if she wants something he needs to trade because he doesn't like to do his work , he always gets people to do his work for him by tricking them in to believing something .And I also think that he is afraid to ask his aunt for things.

Haley M. said...

Q: Why do all of the boys envy and adore Huckleberry Finn?

A: I think that all of the boys envy and adore him because he has a life that they want. He gets to do whatever he wants to do, and he gets go wherever he wants to go. All of the other boys are stuck having to do chores and having to be told what to do, but he is not.

Max Martin said...

Answer to Sinead: What he means by lick is to hit/punch. It is an old term that they use.

Lexie Huether 8A said...

Answer to Anyssa's Question-

All of the boys admire Huckelberry Finn because he has so much freedom. He gets to go wherever he wants whenever he wants, and he doesn't go to school. All of the boys would like a lifestyle such as this so they admire him for having the life that they want.

Paloma L. said...

Anyssa said, "Why do all the boys envy yet admire Hucklberry Finn?"

I think the answer to this is because Huck is somewhat an orphan, and a nomad throughout the town, he has no discipline, no boundaries, and nothing he really HAS to do. Anything and everything that he does he completely up to him. For example, all of the boys are forced to go to Sunday School, and Huck doesn't have to go.

To answer Kathryn's question...

Jimpson weeds are a type of plant that has been used to treat asthma symptoms and act as a painkiller during surgeries. However, some can be toxic.

Sophia H. - 8A said...

Question: Brianna C. said, "How old is Tom? He seems young at times, but at others he seems our age."

Answer: I also had this question while I was reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I did research on the internet, and the main age that kept appearing was twelve (12) years old. However, I also found that Tom was eight, nine, and fourteen.

Kelsey M. 8B said...

To answer Jake M.'s question "When does Tom Sawyer take place?" the book takes place in the pre-Civil War era. It was definitely before 1876, since that was the year Tom Sawyer was published. In the book, the date is never really specified.

Kathryn D. 8A said...

Brian Murphy siad...

What did Tom Sawyer do to make Becky cry?

While Tom Sawyer asks Becky to get engaged to him, he mentions that he was previously engaged to Amy Lawrence.

Adrian C. said...

If the book Tom Sawyer is supposed to relate Mark Twain's life why is there killings and alcohol? Is the book supposed to relate to Mark Twain's life a lot or just a little?

Anyssa M. said...

Answering Caroline's question, the main theme of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer would be friendship. Tom starts a friendship with Huck Finn, Sid, Becky, Mary, Jim, and even Aunt Polly. Also with many others but they all form one big friendship in the book. Friendship would be the main theme but there are more themes like adventure and freedom.

Matthew Zamora responding to:
Alexander Blythe comment...

How was Sid able to throw Tom under the bus when Tom lied to Aunt Polly about pumping water on his head when he actually went swimming instead of going to school?

Sid was able to do this because he realized that Tom’s shirt collar was sewn on with a black thread instead of the white thread Aunt Polly used. This is because when Tom took off his shirt to go swimming he must have ripped his collar and latter sewn it up with some spare thread. However, the only thread he had was black so he had to make do.

To answer Alex S. question about where does this book take place is in St. Petersburg in Missouri, near the Mississippi River.

Jonathan H. said...

When exactly does Tom Sawyer take place?

Bernardo Rebeil said...

How old is Tom?

Tom isn't a certain age. Mark Twain didn't give Tom Sawyer a certain age, on purpose. He meant for Tom to represent a young boy, but at other times to represent an older boy. He did this so that Tom could be any age, to represent the life of a typical male in that time period. Also, so that this book would apply to a reader of any age, from young to old.

Adrian C. in response to Sinead's question said...

To "lick" is a southern term that means to beat up, hurt, punch, etc.

Kyle P. said...

To answer Brian M. Tom made Becky cry because he revealed his past "Engagement" to Amy. She gets very upset of this and storms off. Tom trys to regain herlove by giving her a doorknob. That is why Becky gets upset at Tom.
